• WHAT IS FUNCTIONAL MEDICINE?
• INDIVIDUALIZED LAB TESTING
• COMMON PATIENT SYMPTOMS
Functional medicine is a dynamic approach to finding underlying imbalances within a system. The essence of disease is a deviation from physiological, or internal, homeostasis. Within the realm of functional medicine, all systems are addressed as not only individual entities, but more importantly as integrative and dependent networks.
The hormonal, or endocrine system, is tightly linked to the gastrointestinal system and both are linked to the detoxification system. When there is a glitch in one system, the other two are directly affected and the problem becomes more complex. The isolated organ cannot address the imbalance because organs don't work in isolation; they work intrinsically with one another.
While every individual comes equipped with the same three body systems, every body's physical presentation and organ deficiencies are unique, depending on genetic predisposition, biological environment and emotional factors. For example, one individual with Lupus may have a systemic flare up due to the ingestion of too much sugar whereas another will have a flare up caused by too much stress. Each patient represents a unique, complex and interwoven set of influences on bodily function that has overtime, set the stage for the development of disease or a deficiency in their health.
After a thorough health history analysis, Dr. Ponce will review the patient case and decide which laboratory tests will be most revealing in determining the course of treatment for the patient. Then, with the retrieval of lab results, a specific and individually tailored therapeutic program will be constructed for patients in an effort to lead them to the most efficient and effective road to recovery and whole body wellness.
